Cleaning & Maintaining Your Home Window Film

Making the investment on home window film can pay off in many different ways however if you want to maximise your return on investment its imperative to look after your windows.

At ALLCOOL Window Films, our customers repeatedly ask us about the best ways they can clean and maintain their home window film. Fortunately, the process for both is relatively simple when you know what you’re doing however there are some nuisances involved that we wanted to share.

Following these basic tips will ensure your window film lasts and looks just as good as the day it was installed for years to come.

After Installation - Curing Time

Similarly, to all products that use an adhesive, window film requires time to cure so that it can properly bond to the glass. During this time the adhesive will dry and remaining application solution between the glass and film will evaporate. It’s also quite common to see minor visual defects and general changes in the appearance of the window film at this stage, this is completely normal, and you’ll notice those blemishes begin to disappear during the curing process.

The curing time for every home window film vary drastically dependent on your location, weather, sunlight, humidity and the type of tint that has been installed. The curing process in summer tends to be somewhat fast however in winter the cooler weather can be slower. It’s imperative not to rush this period and let the curing take place at a natural rate.

Following your home window film installation, ALLCOOL Window Films will notify you of how long you can expect the curing process to last. Generally, this process can be anywhere from a few days to 1 month.

Best Practices For Cleaning Your Window Film

As your home window film is less porous than glass it won’t accumulate dirt as quickly as glass and will also be generally easier to clean.

One important thing to remember is never to use abrasive cloths or scrubbing brushes.  Abrasive materials will likely damage the film and should always be avoided to maintain the longevity of your tint. This includes paper towels. The best option is a microfibre cloth or chamois, basically you want something soft that won’t shed onto the film or leave excess.

You should also avoid generic spray and wipe cleaning products when cleaning your window film. A simple solution of mild dishwashing liquid does the job perfectly as its strong enough to remove accidental marks but won’t damage the film. It’s also important to steer clear of any detergents that contain ammonia as this will damage the coating on your window film. This is because ammonia will dissolve the adhesive that resides between the film and the glass meaning you’ll have to replace your tint sooner than anticipated.

The last thing to remember is to always wipe away excess moisture or debris from your window film once you’ve finished, especially near the borders of the film. Extra water and solution can effectively get underneath your tint and break down the adhesive holding the film and glass together.

If you follow these simple rules, you’ll definitely be enjoying your fantastic new window film for many years to come!

Window Film Maintenance

Your home window film won’t require much from you in terms of maintenance however if you want to keep the film looking great for years to come there’s a few things you can do.

Solar Gard recommends occasionally applying a silicone polish like Vuplex if you want to achieve a lustrous surface finish. Additionally, this will guard from instances of accidentally scratching or burnishing.

ALLCOOL Window Films have been providing home window film solutions across Western Australia for 35 years and take great pride in delivering high quality service.
